One evening at a music competition

she says

take me with you

to where you go so often

so my angel, come

I'll take you tonight

to a classical music evening

perfect compositions

themes variations

expositions, developments

and repeating final chords

an educated audience

a breath that draws in

a Haydn cello string

she asks me, the quiet one

is it Mozart

this I hear

you know, my dear

Debussy sounds hazier

on the ear

a girl in a dress of dark red satin

her fingers dance and swirl

like fairies in Monet's garden

she says

take me again

I want to learn more

about what inspires you so, Gaynor

my angel, you know

it's been a lifetime for me

the city halls, auditoriums

orchestra pits and stages

of old theaters from here

and also the waters over

I drink it in with my morning tea

I go to sleep with music in my sherry

I breathe in phrases

art music

but, you know

some only play notes

others make music

some move me in my very being

others move me

not

It was at the Unisa Music Scholarship Competition in October 2006. Two evenings. One for the Final Exams. Grade 8. And one for the Licentiates. Teachers or Performers. The Licentiate Concerts are always fenominal. Everybody has their own favourites, but in the end all agree with the decision of the winners by the panel of adjudicators. Very nice. I miss it.
